About the Center of Patient Innovation
The Center of Patient Innovation is an independent, noncommercial knowledge publication examining how artificial intelligence and other forms of healthcare innovation affect patients.
Healthcare innovation is frequently discussed from the perspective of health systems, clinicians, technology developers and regulators. Those perspectives are essential, but they do not always capture what technological change feels like to the person receiving care.
The Center of Patient Innovation exists to bring that perspective into the discussion.
What We Examine
Our writing focuses on questions such as:
- How are patients already using artificial intelligence to understand and manage their health?
- What rights should patients have when AI influences their diagnosis, treatment or access to care?
- How should healthcare organizations explain their use of AI to patients?
- What happens when patients bring information from ChatGPT, wearables or personal health applications into the exam room?
- How can innovation strengthen rather than weaken the relationship between patients and clinicians?
- How should healthcare systems incorporate patient experience into AI governance and technology design?
The goal is not to promote technology for its own sake. It is to examine whether healthcare innovation addresses real patient needs, improves understanding, protects human agency and contributes to better care.
Our Editorial Perspective
The Center approaches healthcare innovation through several principles:
Patient experience belongs at the beginning
Patients should be involved when healthcare technologies, policies and care processes are being designed, not only after those decisions have been made.
Evidence matters
Articles draw from peer-reviewed research, government publications, healthcare organizations and other credible sources whenever possible. Emerging ideas are identified as emerging ideas rather than presented as established clinical practice.
Technology should remain accountable to people
Efficiency alone is not sufficient. Healthcare innovation should also be evaluated for safety, transparency, accessibility, equity and its effect on the patient-clinician relationship.
Complex ideas should be understandable
Patients should not need a technical or medical background to participate in conversations about technologies that affect their care.
Lived experience is a form of knowledge
Patient experience does not replace clinical or scientific expertise. It contributes information that may not be visible through clinical data, operational metrics or technical performance measures alone.
What the Center Does Not Do
The Center of Patient Innovation does not sell products, promote healthcare technology vendors or provide consulting services.
The content published here is intended for education and general knowledge. It does not provide individual medical advice, diagnosis or treatment recommendations.
About the Founder
The Center of Patient Innovation was founded by Dan Noyes, a healthcare AI strategist, Certified Patient Leader and person living with a chronic neurological condition.
His work brings together patient experience, healthcare AI research and a professional background in communications and strategy. The Center was created to provide a dedicated space for examining healthcare innovation from the perspective of the people most directly affected by it.
